Ultra Low Mile Il Mostro: 1990 Alfa Romeo SZ in New York

This 1990 Alfa Romeo SZ or Sprint Zagato is one of only about 1,000 made between 1989 and 1991. Based on the 75 and built by Zagato, the famous carrozzeria actually had very little to do with its styling, a job which was largely handled by Robert Opron of Citroen SM and DS restyle fame. This one’s said to be the 18th made with only 3,500 or so kilomaters from new. Find it here on Hemmings in New York City for $119,500. Special thanks to BaT reader Santi S. for this submission.
On cosmetic condition, the seller says: “there are the usual hilarious panel gaps that all the SZ’s had, and a few microblisters in the paint. This was common to all SZ’
s, it’s just a question of how bad, and on this car, the paint is very good.” Fiberglass-reinforced plastic body panels are bonded to a steel chassis, and looks were always controversial–the Italian press liked to refer to the car as “Il Mostro”.
The interior looks essentially new barring a small abrasion mark on the driver’s outer seat bolster. Everything including the clock is said to work, and photos depict a big collection of original documentation including a certificate of authenticity and various leather bound manuals.
Here’s the lovely Busso V6, in this form good for nearly 210 HP from the factory. This one’s been fitted with a free-flowing stainless aftermarket exhaust, however the original has been retained for posterity. A Squadra Corsa ECU chip that’s estimated to be good for an additional 15-30 HP is included but not yet fitted.
We like that the seller adds that despite it’s low mileage it’s hard not to drive. It’s worth noting that contemporary press reports lauded the car’s handling and roadholding, with some magazines achieving up to 1.1g on the skidpad.
